In anticipation of Metroid Dread’s release next month, Nintendo released a new trailer that provides additional information about the game’s setting, enemies and environments, as well as what interstellar bounty hunters Samus Aran will be able to do on her latest mission.

Press release:

This trailer gives a good overview of Metroid games and the series. It also shows the game in action.

Samus will be exploring massive labyrinths deep under the planet ZDR, the center of Metroid Dread.

Samus has her Arm Cannon, Missiles and jumping prowess at her disposal. She also has a devastating Melee Counter that deflects enemy attacks. As with all Metroid games, Samus will discover new abilities as she explores.

The Spider Magnet allows Samus to stick to walls and ceilings; the Morph Ball is a Metroid staple that allows Samus to transform into a ball to enter narrow passageways; Flash Shift, an all-new ability that moves Samus quickly forward and backward a short distance; as well as Storm Missile which locks onto multiple targets.

Samus discovers new abilities that expand her exploration options. Soon, all of ZDR will be open to Samus, and she will have the freedom to explore it.

Metroid Dread is a game that’s been called Metroid Dread. One of the “dreads” that will attempt to capture Samus during the game is a dangerous robot called E.M.M.I. These robots are protected by tough armor, so regular attacks can’t penetrate their bodies. These are the times when Samus’ abilities and upgrades will be most useful.

What secrets are hidden on planet ZDR? What terror lies beyond the mission and the dread?

Half of the game franchises that inspired the term ‘metroidvania,’ the Metroid series was a pioneering example of exploration in video games, with vast maps packed with secrets that require backtracking and creative maneuvering to solve. Although the Metroid series was able to adapt into the Metroid Prime series in the first person, it hasn’t done much of the 2D side-scrolling since Metroid: Samus Returns 2017, a remake of Metroid: Return of Samus on the Game Boy. Samus Aran has been in many Super Smash Bros. titles to keep her busy. Dread will be her first 2D adventure since 2002’s Metroid Fusion.
