As a long-time fan of the series, the next game in the Mass Effect series is a mystery and a never-ending nightmare. I love the series primarily for its ambitions in player agency/choice. Although the concessions made in the original trilogy didn’t work out, I appreciated that it was trying to achieve something that most video games can’t. BioWare’s merchandise shop may have accidentally revealed some new information about the next game, hinting that it may be making decisions on which games to consider canonical. It’s a pity.

The store listing is for. This was the teaser poster BioWare released last November for N7 Day. It led to a ( honestly groan-worthy ) wave of fandom on a theory about how the Geth, an artificial race that can be eliminated in Mass Effect 3 depending on the player’s choice, could return in a future game. We don’t need to repeat that. What we want to discuss is the description of the poster’s store. It was the first one that went live.

YouTuber MrHulthen was able to screencap the video and view it on a video. (though Fanbyte doesn’t endorse the title Mass Effect 4 because Mass Effect is Andromedaexists, and BioWare has not said anything that suggests this game will have a numbered entry), however, the original store listing mentioned Commander Shepard, the Trilogy protagonist, twice, suggesting they might be available to play an important role in the new game.

“Shepard’s last quest may have ended Reaper threat, but it came at a great cost to Earth. Fans are still wondering what happens next, even though Shepard and survivors have been left to pick up the pieces.

These implications are that the battle to save Earth in Mass Effect 3 failed (which was not hinted at in any high-resource endings after the Extended cut clarified the final events), and Shepard is one of the survivors picking up the pieces. Shepard is not alive in Mass Effect 3’sendings. This would indicate that Shepard must have made the decision to end all synthetic life at the conclusion of the trilogy. It also suggests that BioWare may be choosing to canonize the ending to the original games, which has been my worst-case scenario for the series for over a decade. These mentions of Commander Shepard were removed from the current listing.

“The threat posed by the Reapers may have been defeated, but it was at great cost to Earth. Fans are left wondering where the next step is, as the survivors continue to pick up the pieces.

It’s a strange thing, right? This is a strange thing. Other strange embellishments are also included in the listing, including the statement that the ship depicted in the poster “resembles” the Normandy (which it does not). However, even that makes me wonder whether that is a fancy upsell or just Shepard’s old ship.

We have reached out to BioWare Gear Store for clarification and will update this story if we get back. As I have said many times since the announcement of this game, BioWare can trample on the Mass Effect series’ own legacy of player choices to make more of these games. had a story already written and was waiting for its conclusion. We didn’t have to return to the Milky Way.

Gamble did not deny that the Mass Effect games were back behind the curtains. The mystery surrounding this game continues. I will be suffering from emotional anguish until next time.
