The idea of being held in high-security isolation is terrifying. It works well as a game. It works well as a game, such as Grand Theft Auto. However, it’s not often we are exposed to the consequences of criminal activity. This has been attempted and accomplished to great success by Team17’s The Escapists, and its sequel The Escapists 2. These games have such an impact on the genre, I wonder why developers haven’t tried to make money from this rich idea. Let’s talk about why more prison sims such as The Escapists are needed in order to feel like a clever mastermind.

They are utterly satisfied

For many, the idea of grinding slowly but surely can seem daunting. Others, however, find patience and perseverance to be a key part of a game’s appeal.

To me, nothing is more satisfying than seeing all your hard-earned progress finally put to good use in a high stakes game. Think about defeating Ganon at Zelda: Breath of the Wild using all your unlocked upgrades. The Escapists also has this feeling. It is an incredible feeling to watch all the pieces fall into place while I execute my clever escape plan. You don’t have to feel rushed, because everything has a purpose.

I still have fond memories of playing the Escapists for the first time. I created a police uniform and key mold using components I had worked very hard on over several in-game days. I was moved by the cinematic portrayal of my character walking out of prison without suspicion.

It is possible that things will not go as you expect them to. It’s a game, just like any other one. But it makes the experience of conquering the challenge all that much more enjoyable.

THEY GIVE A HUGE ARENALINE RUSH

This isn’t a horror movie, but the Escapists certainly scared me on more than one occasion. This leads to the final point. But how scared would it make you feel if your entire operation was halted by a guard discovering contraband or damaged structures? Too often, I have thought an area was safe and secure only to be locked down and chased by attack dogs moments later.

In retrospect, this is actually one of the best and most enjoyable aspects of a prison sim. How fun would a prison sim without risk? It’s not your fault if it happens, but it can be a different story. A corrupted save, glitch. However, I enjoyed every moment of stress-inducing moments while playing The Escapists and loved every minute of it.

Horror games are popular for a reason: people enjoy the adrenaline rush and thrill it gives them. This should be covered in a prison sim that is done well. A new prison sim might benefit from some differences to The Escapists, but certain features, such as solitary confinement, feel a bit lackingluster due to the game’s arcade-ness. This could increase the punishment and provide more incentive to not get caught.

GREAT ESCAPE METHODS and PLAYER CHOICE

One thing I’ve learned about prison escapes, through both real-life stories and media is that there are many ways to get out of prison. Some are undoubtedly creative and outside the norm. The Escapists clearly placed this idea at its core. The game offers many different and unusual ways to play the game and escape prison. You can use a breathable bag to disguise yourself and be taken out by trash collectors. Or you can simply walk out of the front gate and knock out most of the guards.

This variation has the side effect that you feel completely in control of your escape plan. The freedom to choose how you want to escape is up to you, and that’s a crucial part of the game’s authenticity. The Escapists may not be taken too seriously, but the basic ideas around the progression of the player are very serious and should be an ongoing trend in future prison games. It would be a shame for any game to have only one way of escaping. Multiple ways to play the game adds replayability.

CO-OP PERMITS GREAT TEAM STRATEGIES

Co-op is perfect for certain concepts. A co-op prison sim seems like a natural choice. Think about it. How many television shows/films have featured a group of prisoners who work together and each play a key role to achieve the perfect break-out?

Some games attempted to create a co-op prison escape, such as The Way Out. In this game, you and another player must use careful communication and tactics to escape prison. This was a great example of the potential for a co-op prison escape sim. This was only the opening segment of a linear story-telling game, so we didn’t have time to explore fun prison sims.

The Escapists2 even introduced co-op to its previous entry. It was a great success, much to the delight of fans. My friends and I had many great times trying to escape prison together.
