Over time, comic book-to-video game adaptations have often proven more unsuccessful than successful, particularly during their initial years of production.

Before superheroes made an impactful turn in video gaming, we had to content ourselves with titles like Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis (2003) and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (2000) before finally experiencing one with Superman 64 (1999).

Don’t misunderstand; we did find several gems like TMNT Arcade (1989), Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (2006) to name only a few. But adaptations really came into their own after 2009 with Batman: Arkham Asylum being widely considered as an outstanding superhero game of all time.

Rocksteady Studios was responsible for creating the Batman Akrham series which would later go on to produce two sequels and an outsourced prequel through WB Games Montreal. Not including any spinoffs, Batman Arkham Knight was released as its final mainline entry.

Batman: Arkham Knight may have had its fair share of glitches on PC, but console players seemed to enjoy playing it to its core. As with its predecessors, however, Batman: Arkham Knight went on to score as high as an 87 on Metacritic and become one of the highest scoring titles released at that time.

Now eight years have gone by since Batman: Arkham Knight was first released and fans are looking back fondly at what many consider one of the great action games ever produced.

Rocksteady released one of the greatest action videogames ever with Arkham Knight 8 years ago today,” read a tweet by @ArkhamNumb.

“Absolutely beautiful graphics that still hold up generations later; 360/PS3 to One/PS4 was the peak graphical jump,” tweeted @AidanSeunarine. @kuba_c14 offered that she found Arkham Knight “easy on her soul; my favorite Arkham game!” and @sw_jango added it was their favorite of all-time due to its fluid gameplay – making this his #1.

Fans agree that Batman: Arkham Knight needs an upgraded experience for next gen systems and one of God of War’s stars wants to play an iconic character from Batman games like Arkham Trilogy on Nintendo Switch later this fall.
