Westwood Studios created the real-time strategy Dune computer game Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty, which was published by Virgin Games in December 1992.
It was also known as Dune II: Battle for Arrakis in Europe and Dune: The Battle for Arrakis in the North American Mega Drive/Genesis port. It is based on the 1984 film Dune, directed by David Lynch and adapted on the same-titled science fiction book by Frank Herbert.
Although Dune II was not the first real-time strategy (RTS) video game, it did set the standard that would be used for many years to follow. Dune II is therefore the quintessential “real-time strategy” game.
It was a major success and established the groundwork for several games, including Command & Conquer, Warcraft, and StarCraft, by striking a balance between complexity and inventiveness.

- Click on the download button below. It should redirect you to your download (a .rar file). Make sure you download the file properly and that your internet does not disconnect while downloading.
- Extract the “Dune_II_DOS” folder to your desktop. You will need a software such as WinRAR to do this.
- Download DOSBox and put a shortcut for DOSBox onto your desktop.
- Open the “Dune_II_DOS” folder and then open the “Game Files” folder.
- Drag the file called “DUNE2” on top of the DOSBox icon and the game should now launch in DOSBox.
