Report Shows Declining Interest in Battle Royale Games, But Fortnite Still Thrives
A new industry report suggests that gamers are gradually losing interest in the battle royale genre, though *Fortnite* continues to dominate. According to Newzoo’s 2025 PC & Console Gaming Report, playtime in battle royale titles has dropped from 19% in 2021 to just 12% in 2024.
Despite the overall decline, *Fortnite* has strengthened its position, growing its share of battle royale playtime from 43% in 2021 to 77% in 2024. Epic Games’ frequent updates, seasonal events, and high-profile collaborations have helped keep the game fresh and relevant.
Meanwhile, the broader shooter genre remains strong, accounting for around 40% of total playtime. Other genres, such as role-playing games, are also seeing growth—rising from 9% in 2021 to 13% in 2024—thanks to hits like *Diablo 4*, *Hogwarts Legacy*, and *Baldur’s Gate 3*.
While interest in the battle royale genre may be fading, *Fortnite* appears to be an outlier, continuing to thrive as others lose ground.
