Mario Kart World Uses Drive-Thrus to Unlock New Character Outfits
Nintendo has introduced a creative new way for players to unlock character outfits in *Mario Kart World*, using a drive-thru system tied to the game’s open-world design.
During the April 17 Mario Kart World Direct, Nintendo confirmed that players will discover diner-style restaurants called **Yoshi’s** while exploring in Free Roam mode. By driving through these locations, players can pick up **Dash Food**—region-themed items that provide a small speed boost when used, similar to traditional kart items.
Each Dash Food item also temporarily changes the character’s outfit. Once unlocked through the drive-thru, the outfit becomes available permanently and can be selected in all other game modes. Outfits shown so far include Waluigi in a mariachi suit, Mario in aviator gear, and Bowser in a heavy-metal biker look.
While fans are excited about the new customization features, *Mario Kart World* hasn’t escaped criticism over pricing. The game will launch at **$80**, alongside the **$450 Nintendo Switch 2**—a pricing model that has sparked backlash across social media. Nintendo has not commented on potential changes.
*Mario Kart World* launches June 5, 2025, as a Switch 2 launch title.
