Microtransactions Dominate PC Gaming Revenue in 2024
A new report from Newzoo reveals that **58% of all PC gaming revenue in 2024 came from microtransactions**, highlighting a major shift in how gamers are spending their money.
In total, **$24.4 billion** was spent on in-game purchases across popular titles like *Call of Duty: Black Ops 6*, *Fortnite*, and *Roblox*. This figure excludes DLCs, which themselves brought in **$5.3 billion**, making up **14%** of overall revenue and rising 0.8% from 2023.
While **total PC gaming revenue reached $37.3 billion**, marking a small 0.1% increase from the previous year, not all categories saw growth. Revenue from “premium” pay-to-play games dropped **2.6%**, totalling **$10.7 billion**, indicating a shift toward free-to-play models with optional purchases.
Interestingly, the report also aligns with earlier findings that **67% of PC playtime is spent on games over six years old**, such as *GTA Online* and *Fortnite*. Only **8% of playtime** goes to games released in the past two years, showing that many gamers stick with familiar titles while continuing to spend through microtransactions.
This trend is expected to continue through at least **2027**, as the free-to-play model becomes even more dominant in the PC gaming space.
