ESL Announced a New Dota Pro Tour

Good news for all Dota 2 fans! The scene is undergoing a significant transformation with the introduction of the Dota 2 ESL Pro Tour. This much-anticipated shift to one of the most renowned Esports has generated a lot of buzz, and fans are eager to learn more about the new format.

DreamLeague Is Back

DreamLeague Seasons 19 and 20 have been chosen as the entry events for the broader EPT series, featuring a new tournament format for 16 invited teams.

The tournament schedule will span over the course of two weeks, consisting of two group stages, reducing the teams from 16 to 8, and concluding with playoffs featuring the top 4 teams.

In addition to the opportunity to compete, the winner of each event will receive a whopping $1,000,000 from DreamLeague. The best team from each event will also earn an invitation to the Riyadh Masters in August, while the second-place team in S20 will secure a ticket as well.

Dates:

  • DreamLeague Season 19: April 9-23, 2023 (1 seed qualifies for Riyadh Masters)
  • DreamLeague Season 20: June 7-25, 2023 (2 seeds qualify for Riyadh Masters)
  • Riyadh Masters 2023: July 17-30, 2023

Riyadh Masters

In 2022, Riyadh Masters was the second largest Dota 2 tournament with a prize pool of $4 million. Considering the fact that Dota 2 majors had a prize pool of $500.000, Riyadh was 8 times bigger than any Major tournament. However, it was still way below The International which had a prize pool of almost $19 million.

Be that as it may, this year, Riyadh Masters will be worth $15 million, almost as big as The International, which is crazy, to say the least.

In addition to the three teams that will qualify from DreamLeague, the remaining 17 teams will be determined based on their average placings. These teams will then compete in a Play-in round for a chance to secure a spot in the Group Stage of the post-season event.

Although the Dota 2 ESL Pro Tour seems promising with its huge prize pool and prestigious events, it has also raised concerns among fans for two reasons.

Firstly, the fact that the series is supported by the Saudi Esports Federation and Savvy Gaming Group has caused controversy and skepticism among some fans. While many see this as a positive investment in the Dota scene, others see it as a PR move by Saudi Arabia to gain attention and recognition in the Esports community.

Secondly, fans are confused by the ranking system implemented by ESL, which seems to prioritize teams based on their global ranking rather than their performance in their respective regions. The system has also placed some teams in unexpected rankings, leading to questions about how invitations and spots for events will be distributed. Is it even fair?

What Does This Mean For The Professional Dota 2 Scene?

The launch of the ESL Pro Tour and its associated tournaments marks a significant development for the professional Dota 2 scene.

With a prize pool of $17 million and the participation of some of the world’s best players, these events are sure to attract a lot of attention from fans, Esports enthusiasts, and Dota 2 bettors. However, there are also concerns surrounding the involvement of the Saudi Arabian Esports Federation and Savvy Gaming Group in supporting the tournaments, as well as confusion over the ranking system used by ESL to determine team invitations.

Overall, it remains to be seen how the ESL Pro Tour will impact the Dota 2 scene in the long term, but it is clear that these events will have a significant influence on the game’s competitive landscape in the coming months.

Conclusion

In conclusion, ESL is launching its own version of the Valve Dota Pro Circuit with three tournaments that will take place in Europe and offer a combined prize pool of $17 million.

While the prospect of such large-scale events is exciting for Dota fans, there are concerns within the community regarding some of the finer details, such as the confusing ranking system and the involvement of the Saudi Esports Federation and Savvy Gaming Group.

Despite these concerns, the ESL Pro Tour promises to attract the best Dota 2 players in the world and provide an exciting new addition to the Dota Esports scene.
