The Battle for Middle-earth is an addictive real-time strategy game where warring factions gather resources in order to construct military bases and armies on-site. Buildings may only be constructed within predefined plots in The Battle for Middle-earth.
Plots range from farmhouses to full-fledged castles with different slot arrangements and available buildings; any plot can be purchased when in sole possession by one side’s forces; their only resource are “resources”, produced through dedicated buildings inexhaustibly.
Four factions on both sides engage in the War of the Ring: Rohan is represented by its horse-lords while Gondor with its forges and battlements are both associated with Free Peoples; on the Darkness’ side are Isengard’s Uruk-hai warriors as well as Mordor’s Orc Hordes which include Haradrim Mumakil Trolls as forces supporting Mordor.
EA Los Angeles produced The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth as a real-time strategy video game released for Microsoft Windows on December 6, 2004 and inspired by Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy which itself is inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien’s original novel. This game uses short clips from each movie with voice actors representing hobbits and wizards; its SAGE engine powers it. A sequel, entitled The Lord of the Rings II was then made available on March 2, 2006.
