Player control of Jack Carver, an ex-US Marine who now earns his living offering boat trips in Micronesia (South Pacific). On one such excursion he was hired to take journalist Valerie Constantine out to some uncharted islands so she can photograph World War 2 Japanese remains there; on their return trip however their boat was attacked with a bazooka and eventually sunk!
Under fire from unknown mercenaries she finds refuge in a cave where players assume control. At first level Harlan Doyle uses radio transmissions to inform him about his situation and provide helpful hints; initially Jack searches for Valerie but his ultimate aim is evasion from the islands where Doyle provides vital intelligence about enemy forces as he helps weaken and undermine them, or sometimes even transports her – though all without providing too many details on himself and what exactly his role on these islands may be.
At various islands within the game world you will discover secret research laboratories run by Krieger Corporation that breed mutant trigens treated with mutagens to alter their genome, known as mutagens. Due to a mishap these mutant beings became loose; and these now pose as deadly enemies both to mercenaries as well as to yourself personally.
