Halo 2 is an action-packed shooter, where players are primarily able to experience gameplay in first person. The game requires players to use both human and alien weapons and vehicles in order to advance through its levels.
Players are not shown their health bar, instead they have a shield which absorbs damage and regenerates whenever the player isn’t being fired at. Dual-wielding certain weapons allows the player to sacrifice accuracy and the ability to use grenades or melee attacks in exchange for sheer firepower. Each weapon has its own advantages and disadvantages, depending on the situation.
Most Covenant weapons do not use disposable ammunition clips, but instead have a battery that cannot be replenished if it runs out. These weapons may overheat, however, if they are fired repeatedly for long periods of time. The human weapons have a lower penetration rate and need to be reloaded, but they cannot heat up due to extended fire.
Eight grenades can be carried by the player (four Covenant grenades and four human grenades) in order to disrupt or dislodge enemies. In Halo 2, the ability to board vehicles near you that travel at low speed is new. Player or AI can latch onto the enemy vehicle to forcefully eject the driver.
