FFXIV Director Details: Server Maintenance and Issues Fixed Soon [UPDATE]

Director and producer Naoki Yoshida outlined a few measures being taken to address the recent server and login issues surrounding Final Fantasy XIV and the launch of Endwalker. He explained how the team is working to fix disconnections during login and the plans for the future in a blog post on the official website.

The maintenance of the lobby server took place just after the blog post was published. It is believed to make the queue and login process more efficient. Queue lobbies can hold a maximum of 17,000 people. If the queue exceeds that limit, players trying to log in will get Error 2002. Yoshida–san stated that backup development servers were repurposed to increase queue lobbies’ size to 21,000. Although it won’t improve queue times, it will allow more players to get in line.

[UPDATE] FFXIV servers will go down for maintenance beginning December 7 at 10 PM PT. It will continue until December 8 at 2 AM PT. This is the maintenance period Yoshida–san mentioned in his blog post. This has been changed to reflect that specific details about the maintenance have been added to the original story. )

The second round of maintenance will be performed on December 7, at 10 PM PT, and should end by December 8, at 2 AM PT. (Sorry for the US West Coast bias. Be sure to check your time zone.) This requires that all servers go offline for four hours. This is to fix Errors 4004 and 3001, which are more frustrating.

Yoshida San explained that servers wait until 100 players are allowed to clear the queue. The server then lets them in when they have enough space and continues the process. Some players waiting in the queue for Error 4004 will be disconnected if this happens. While the team has a solution that should resolve the problem, they will continue to monitor it.

Error 3001 is another problem when servers are overloaded and allow more players to log in than they should, exceeding their server’s limits. The login queue will be closed, and players will be removed. The December 8 maintenance will include a fix. We’ll explain the details in a blog post.

These fixes may help with some of the more difficult parts of the game, but they are temporary solutions. Yoshida San reiterated that their ability to develop long-term solutions had been limited by the global semiconductor shortage caused by COVID-19 labor shortages. “We have made substantial investment, even more than usual, to secure the required hardware. But, the fact is that it takes a long time to prepare the server hardware.”

He said it could take several months or longer to create new Worlds for players to log in, but he couldn’t give an estimated date. These are fixes to optimize source code and improve how servers handle player counts. However, large-scale solutions will need to be found.

Active subscribers who own HTML will receive seven days of free subscription time. More could be added in the near future. You can check the peak hours for your region to determine when you will be able to log in to play or FFXIV.
