Half-Life 2 is an iconic videogame and, to its credit, not strictly horror related – yet still boasts one of the creepiest in-game locations ever seen in an interactive narrative experience.

If you have ever experienced Valve’s 2004 FPS game Ravenholm is certainly something that stands out. Players enter this ghost town of zombie-infected ghost towns during chapter six – its creepy atmosphere combined with lack of ammo makes for an extremely terrifying section that gamers on Reddit believe remains one of the scariest parts in any video game even after 14 years have gone by!

“When I was younger, Ravenholm scared the living crap out of me so much that it stopped me completing Half-Life 2!” admitted Reddit user Zakrath. What games have you not completed due to fear?

Others have had similar experiences: Drewthezombiekiller replied with: “Hahah me too, buddy. When my ammo ran out in Ravenholm I took “Don’t go there” very literally – getting stuck for two days without an ammo pack and no idea of where I needed to be”, leaving him stuck for two days before quitting, due to late hours at home alone.” Tarheel343 described similar feelings: “My first time through Ravenholm I made it until the fast zombie and quickly quit again — no later HL2, again for six months,” explained Horbigast.

All things considered, it makes perfect sense that any kid would feel terrified in Ravenholm. Me personally? Not so much; for some reason Admiral Razorbeard from Rayman 2: The Great Escape freaked me out more because his appearance looked quite intimidating to me at that age and still makes an impactful statement today about my taste in horror games!
