Are You Hoping For a Red Dead Redemption Movie? – Take-Two CEO Believes Otherwise

Game Rant reported on 9 August that Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick felt unlikely a movie based on popular gaming franchise The Last of Us or Super Mario Bros Movie would come about, regardless of their success.

Zelnick noted that her company would take “an extremely selective approach to licensing”. Though some adaptations had proven successful, many had also resulted in significant monetary loss despite attempts at successful adaptations.

Zelnick put an end to this dream when she made it clear that Take-Two would not depend on another company’s success in another area of entertainment business for success.

Looks are important. And this doesn’t look good at all!

Keep this in mind as this news may be devastating: Take-Two has other film projects underway such as BioShock and Borderlands that might generate greater profits, thus possibly prompting Zelnick to revisit RDR as an option in his decision-making.

Regressing into our grief may be easy, but cinema has not proven successful for Take-Two in the past – just look at Max Payne! That film had an $85 million budget but only made $40.7 million domestically; thus caution must be exercised by Take-Two when undertaking projects of such scope and budget.

Even looking at Borderlands as an example, its future remains murky after years of delays have resulted in it not yet reaching completion. Fans who follow such projects find it hard to remain excited when uncertain of its path forward.

Stepping away from game-to-movie adaptations for now, an elephant in the room remains: RDR for Nintendo Switch.

Zelnick had to defend the decision of pricing an older game at $49.99; when asked, Zelnick explained his pricing decision by noting it as being commercially accurate.

Evidently, these words sent fans into an uproarious frenzy.

Take-Two has no concrete plans for an RDR film adaptation at present; enthusiasm has officially dissipated. Still, we hope that there is at least some chance it may happen eventually; therefore we’re doing everything in our power to keep that hope alive.
