Another game on the internet is taking extra precautions to fight the growing tide of toxicity which (unfortunately) is associated with playing. Call of Duty will begin by using specialized AI software that can detect any instances of abusive behavior.

This tool is known as ToxMod which is designed in order to “identify in real-time and enforce against toxic speech – including hate speech, discriminatory language, harassment and more” It will be “the only proactive voice chat moderation solution purpose-built for games”. Every time you’ve thought that someone else was listening the fear is now based on the fact that someone is watching you.

In the past, ToxMod has been used by games that are online before but they are smaller games so Call of Duty is its first instance that the software is used by this large number of gamers. However, even though this is an enormous leap forward in the fight against harmful behavior, the program will not issue punishments for violators, which Activision wants to make clear. “Call of Duty’s voice chat Moderation system is only able to submit complaints about harmful behavior, which are classified based on the nature of behavior and its degree of severity, based on the ever-changing model. Activision will decide the manner in which it enforces the moderation of voice chats,” said the FAQ section to enable voice chats.

Additionally, any abuse that is flagged will be evaluated not just by the specific terms used, but also on the background, described by Modulate (the firm behind the technology), “While the n-word is typically considered a vile slur, many players who identify as black or brown have reclaimed it and use it positively within their communities… If someone says the n-word and clearly offends others in the chat, that will be rated much more severely than what appears to be reclaimed usage that is incorporated naturally into a conversation.”

What is the possibility of something going wrong? We ask, as we look at Instagram because of its infamously questionable guidelines for moderation that often slam people who don’t belong. Although we’d love to think that all goes perfectly, there’s numerous issues in the moderation process, particularly when users have to exercise their own judgment.

If you’re feeling sad, or perhaps you’re aware that this program will catch the snare, keep in mind that you are able to see Nicki Minaj step on enemies with a smile to the max. Don’t you feel better?

The new moderation system will roll out during its beta phase across North America from 31 August to 31 August. When it will roll across all players and other players, Activision will inform its players according to. Simply be respectful and play well and you won’t face problems.
