CRUSADER KINGS 3 FAITH and FERVOR, A GUIDE FOR RELIGION

This is a portrait of medieval Europe. Crusader Kings 3 has much to say about Christianity. Medieval life was filled with controversy and power struggles among the faiths. You’ll often see rulers and countries embrace the latest must-have heresy. This guide will cover the fundamental aspects of religion you should know and the Doctrines that shaped your rise to power.

We’ll start by looking at the Religion screen, which can be found at bottom left of your screen. This switches the map to the religious mode and opens the window for your current Faith. The window contains a lot of information, but don’t get too involved in the details.

If you are a Catholic player and have some knowledge of Christianity, it will be quite intuitive. However, we’ll start with the basics and work our way up.

CK3 Head Of Faith

A Head of Faith oversees religious matters in most religions. There are two types of Heads of Faith if they exist: Spiritual and Temporal. Each type has its own distinct characteristics.

Spiritual

    • As a Theocracy, they can rule their own lands

    • A prominent clergy member is awarded a position

    • Can grant claims on landed title to pious persons

    • Characters can be granted gold in exchange for Piety or opinion

    • If the Faith has Great Holy Wars the Head can choose the target

Temporal

    • Is the founder and direct heir of the Faith?

    • If the Faith has Great Holy Wars the Head can direct them all and decide the target

CK3 Devotion and Piety

A monthly tick and special events are the basis of piety. This currency is also used to fund religious activities. This currency can be used to buy favors from clergy and declare Holy Wars.

Your level of devotion determines how the clergy of the Faith view you. This ranges from neutrally at Dutiful to Faithful, Devoted Servant and Paragon of Virtue until you reach the huge +60 for being a Religious icon. This is linked to your Piety but not specific values. This means that you can still practice Piety and not lose your Devotion levels. You can only lose levels by participating in events that can lead you to the negative Sinful state.

CK3 Virtues and Sins

Sins and Virtues refer to the personality traits characters can have. Some of these traits are good while others are bad. An character will receive an opinion modifier if they have any of these, depending on the Faith of their observer.

For example, Compassionate. There are many modifiers that can affect normal gameplay. However, there is a separate group for Faith opinions. This means that Compassionate is Virtuous to Catholics and grants +10 opinion from Catholic characters. It also grants +1.0 Piety per month.

This Faith modifier applies to all Virtues in the Catholicism window. Sins lose 10 opinions and 1 Piety each month. These Traits can also have a significant impact on events and stress levels, but this is not the purpose of this guide.

Tenets are the rites of the faith. Each religion has three with some overlap among similar Faiths. We’ll continue our brief look at this by going through the Catholic Tenets, but this is not exhaustive since Paradox has included many other Faiths with many more Tenets.

Armed Pilgrimages

  • Piety reduces Holy Wars’ cost by 20%
  • A Head of Faith may declare Holy Wars with high Fervor.
  • Receives a bonus for religious conversion council action per Holy Site (if there is no Head of Faith)
  • Members of this Faith receive additional benefits upon completion of a Pilgrimage

Communion

  • Head of Faith gold can be paid to remove criminal act modifiers and gain piety
  • Heads of Faith have the power to excommunicate characters
  • Honesty is a virtue, and deceitful is a sin

Monasticism

  • Vows can be taken by Courtiers to become Monks
  • Temperate is a virtue, and Gluttonous is a sin

As you can see, there are some tangible benefits to being a member. However, you’ll find better Tenets if you look at smaller Faiths. Cathars, for example, have the Consolamentum Tnet that reduces the Short Reign duration by half and allows them to commit suicide at any age or infirm without facing the usual penalties.

CK3 Doctrines

Not only are the Tenets what set Faiths apart from others, but many of the laws in a belief system also fall under Doctrines. You will find Doctrines that cover most aspects of your life, including Marriage, Crime and Clergy, as well as a Special category. These Doctrines define what you can do and cannot do. They are essentially religious law. Take Divorce, as an example. This must be approved and confirmed by the Pope.

Each Faith has its own set of Main Doctrines that outlines their core ideals. This is Catholicism’s definition of a Male-Dominated society. It restricts women’s roles in all ways and has all Temples held by a Realm priest who serves as a Theocratic Vassal.
