PlayStation 5 users have warned about new release potentially breaking their consoles.

PlayStation 5 owners have been advised to clean out the dust on their console before playing its latest major exclusive, as fans have reported overheating issues while playing.

The PS5 is an impressive console, and anyone who’s come near one after an extensive gaming session knows it produces quite a bit of heat. Unfortunately, since Square Enix released Final Fantasy XVI fans have reported their console was overwhelmed with heat from playing this RPG title and forced it shut down altogether!

According to Push Square’s reports, there have been multiple cases of the title forcing console shutdown during one specific cutscene (I won’t provide details due to spoilers; for more info see this tweet instead) but only those playing Graphics mode (the mode which prioritizes resolution over frame rate) appear to be affected.

“[My PS5] went from quiet to berserk mode almost instantly with fan speed accelerating wildly and suddenly blacking out in mere seconds before playing three beeps before shutting off,” Reddit user Common_Judgment_9781 noted, sharing an image from said cutscene. Overheating messages being reported are common in games like This one; but never have I experienced anything remotely similar despite running fans and AC to help cool the room during summer heat waves; also, table top positioning allowed ample air flow leaving lots of openness with no dust buildup – never received overheating warnings before!”

Final Fantasy XVI’s overheating consoles is nothing new; previous reports had stated intense boss battles as being responsible. While PS5’s automatic shutdown mechanism serves to minimize damage by shutting it off when too hot, it should never get that hot in the first place!

If it hasn’t already, now is an opportune moment for cleaning out dust from your PS5 console – even though this might not provide a permanent solution, doing so should help to lower overall temperatures on it.
