Two Sunset Overdrive sequels may be owned by Xbox
Since its 2014 release, Sunset Overdrive has been considered an essential game. Yet, a decade and a half have passed with no sign of a sequel. If we believe the leaks, Xbox could now hold exclusive publishing rights for two sequels. This may shed light on the reasons why Playstation or Insomniac Games did not release a sequel to the original game despite having the IP rights.
According to the X page (previously Twitter) of Xbox informer eXtas1stv’s leaked Insomniac documents, Xbox secured rights to two Sunset Overdrive follow-ups. This led to a lot of speculation amongst fans.
Sony’s acquisition of Insomniac Games, a company known for PlayStation games, gave fans hope that sequels would be released. The sequel to Sunset Overdrive was put on hold despite Sony owning the rights. They were more interested in their other titles.
Sony gave priority to titles such as Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank and Sunset Overdrive. Fans are left wondering if Sunset Overdrive will ever be released and contemplating how Sony and Microsoft have a complex relationship.
While fans await Sunset Overdrive sequels and a remastered version, avid gamers have speculated about possible scenarios. These include Microsoft purchasing the IP rights from Sony or Sony buying publishing rights from Microsoft. Another possibility is a multiplatform release negotiated by Sony. Unfortunately, the future of this series is uncertain and it could be doomed. Fans await the outcome of discussions as they unfold.
Sunset Overdrive is a game that was released on Xbox One in 2014, and if you haven’t heard of it, Insomniac games and Microsoft created the title. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic cartoonish world with robots and colorful characters. Mutated energy drink monsters are also featured. Players were armed with unusual weapons such as the Propain Launcher or Kitty Cannon to take down FizzCo, the negligent company that was responsible for turning the city into mutants.
Insomniac Games’ wild, open-world game was a gaming sensation when released and became an Xbox exclusive. The anticipated sequel is still elusive despite positive reviews and laudable sales.
